Melbourne Cup

Hear ye, hear ye! Melbourne Cup day is held on the first Tuesday in November every year, and it is an event like no other, and is not to be missed!

It is hard to describe the fan fare, frivolity and fantastic fun, that revolves around this great day in Australia. The day itself is proclaimed a public holiday in the state of Victoria where it is held, and it might as well be a public holiday in every other state as well, because very little work gets done.

It is no exaggeration to say that the whole of Australia stops work to watch the running of the most prestigous race at Flemington racecourse each year. Eyes are glued to TV screens from the top end to the bottom of Tasmania. Many businesses have a Cup theme day, where employees are encouraged to dress up, or dress down, whichever they prefer, in something relating to the event.

Cup fever spreads far and wide, so no matter where you are working in Australia at the time, you are sure to be involved in the local festivities. You will find all manner of entertainment, from hobby-horse races at the local bowling club to more elaborate affairs at bigger venues.

If you are lucky enough to be at the racecourse itself on this momentous day, you are truly blessed and will have the time of your life. Many race goers take the day very seriously indeed and the fashions are a highlight that reflects this, however many more enjoy a much more 'take your shoes off' kind of party at the racecourse and are often seen enjoying their own party (or parties) in the surrounding areas that adjoin the trackside.

Dress up or dress down in your best horse racing gear. Either way you are in for a real treat on Melbourne Cup Day.
