48 Hours in Newcastle NSW

Newcastle NSW

Whether you are in Australia on a working holiday or a longer term visit, your sightseeing wouldn't be complete without a visit to Newcastle.

Nobbys Beach
The city in general has long been associated with being a coal port and industrial centre. These days it is becoming associated more with beautiful beaches, tourist attractions such as Fort Scratchley, the Newcastle Museum, and a renown cafe and entrepreneurial culture.

Eateries abound in Darby St, Newcastle City, and Beaumont St, Hamilton.

There are of course a number of modern shopping malls which offer a great assortment of food from around the world.

Newcastle lies on the coast and is about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Sydney. Beautiful and popular surfing beaches such as Merewether, Bar Beach and Nobbys Beach surround the city, and the harbour provides a wonderful entry point for both coal ships and cruise ships alike.

The harbour is also popular with fisherman and has a reputation to uphold of being one of the best breakwalls on the East Coast for fishing, especially for Mulloway, also known as Jewfish.

Newcastle is also the gateway to the famous Hunter Valley Vineyards. Many world class wineries have cellar doors where you can enjoy a great lunch in the open air with wine to match your meal. This area is very popular with Sydney residents looking for a day trip or weekend away. If you are wanting to stay in the Hunter Valley it pays to book ahead.

The Port Stephens/Nelson Bay area lies just to the North of Newcastle and is a gateway to Whale Watching cruises and Dolphin experiences within the shelter of the Bay. The Nelson Bay foreshore draws people with its attractive setting of Cafes overlooking the D'albora Marina. This is also a popular area and it pays to book ahead especially during the summer months.

The Nelson Bay area is a great place to go fishing with a number of species readily available in the Bay.

It is important to know that you will need a fishing licence before thowing a line in the water, for both salt water and fresh water species.

Licences are readily available at a reasonable daily, monthly or yearly rate, and can be purchased from any fishing tackle shops and online. Licence fees go toward maintaining fisheries. Please check that you obtain the right licence for each state in Australia.

Newcastle NSW is a great place to visit or work during a working holiday of Australia. There are certainly plenty of things to do in Newcastle during a 48hr visit. You will be spoilt for choice!
